Rules News and Dates

Accord

The U3As of Beverley, Caves, Cottingham, Hessle and Swanland formed the Accord Group several years ago for the benefit of their members. There are some rules to ensure the system operates fairly and is not abused.

1. A member of one U3A may belong to an interest group of another U3A if a place is available and their own U3A does not have a similar group. No charge is made for this, other than the same charge that may apply to all members of that group, ie for room hire, biscuits etc. (It is not anticipated that the same person would wish to join more than two groups at another U3A. If so they would be expected to join that U3A as a full member)

2. No member of any U3A is allowed to join in the general meetings of another U3A, eg our Thursday meetings, nor be present at their AGM. If this happens that person must pay the full subscription and become a member of that U3A.

3. In exceptional cases a guest may be brought to a general meeting on payment of a small fee, to be decided by the host U3A. (Not more than two visits without joining as a full member). This applies also to “taster” visits by someone sampling up to two meetings before deciding whether to become a member of a particular U3A.

Booking of Digital Equipment

From the time we purchased our equipment, early in 2006, its use has steadily increased, both at general Thursday meetings and by various interest groups. Demand for its use is likely to further increase, thus making it even more important that those requiring to borrow the equipment book it as far as possible in advance with Malcolm Lawrenson, our Administrator, who keeps a diary noting all requests. Failure to book ahead may lead to finding the equipment already booked out or not giving time for Malcolm to make alternative arrangements for issue should he be away on holiday, etc. Alan Boden

Copyright Licence

The Third Age Trust has entered into an agreement with the Copyright Licensing Agency to allow any participating U3A to multi-photocopy and digitally copy books, journals, magazines and original print material for educational purposes. Swanland U3A has paid the annual fee of £15.30 to enable it to take advantage of the agreement.  Please note that the photocopying of music is not covered. Alan Boden

Travel

From October onwards keep an eye on our notice board – or encourage friends to do it for you if you can’t get to Thursday meetings. Hopefully the lists will go up for our 2009 overseas holiday at that time. During May we hope to visit Lake Garda in Italy, but dates and time of flights, hopefully from Humberside, have not yet been released by the airlines. Jennie Thomas

Parking at St Barnabas

Please park thoughtfully in the St Barnabas car park to maximize the number of cars that can get parked while leaving space where the bollard denotes a reservation for a guest speaker. A word of caution about parking on the neighbouring St Barnabas Drive. Two members who parked their car in the dip at the bottom of the Drive had their car written off by flash floods in June.      Alan Boden

U3A News Magazine

The next issue will be sent by direct mail in October to all members whose Swanland U3A subscriptions have been received by 30th September. Bill Lamb

Lawns Event – 2009

On Thursday, 2nd April, we shall be hosting our bi-annual Lawns Event, when outside guests are invited to talk to us on a given theme. In April the theme will be “Behind the Scenes” and our speakers will talk on different aspects of the world of theatre.

Speakers booked so far include John Godber and his wife, Jane Thornton. John is joint artistic director of Hull Truck Theatre and a renowned writer. His plays have been performed all over the world and brought pleasure and laughter to millions. Jane is also a writer and has collaborated with her husband in the writing of some of his best known plays, for example Bouncers and Shakers. Her own plays too have been performed with great success. John and Jane will open the event for us.

Patrick Spottiswoode is Director of Education at the Globe theatre on Bankside in London. We are thrilled that he has agreed to come and talk to us about the development of the Globe, replica of the Elizabethan theatre, where Shakespeare himself acted, and a hugely popular attraction on the South Bank.

Our final speaker has yet to be confirmed, so we shall have to keep you guessing, but who would not want to come to hear the previously mentioned guests?

Please note the date: Thursday 2nd April at the Lawns. Tickets will be on sale from January, and to other U3As in Yorkshire a few weeks later. Jennie Thomas
