The Pitmen Painters

In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they continued, as before, to work down the mine. This humorous and deeply moving play by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) was a sell-out at the National Theatre in the spring and is, according to The Times, ‘A beautiful work of art that everybody should see.’

A Christmas Carol

Those of us who attended the performances produced by The Stephen Joseph Theatre Company in July and August this year agreed that this company is going from strength to strength and this specially adapted version of this classic and much-loved story looks as if it will be another winner for them. The production features sixteen young performers working alongside the professional cast. Dickens spent time in Malton. What if Scrooge grew up in Ryedale? Was the penny-pinching old miser a Yorkshire man after all?

The Secret Garden

Following in the wake of his acclaimed production of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ Ian Brown directs a spectacular new musical adaptation of Francis Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel. Arriving from India, Mary Lennox is sent to live in an imposing manor house in the North Yorkshire Moors. She is befriended by Dickon, a local lad, and discovers the lost garden, its treasures and its secrets.

And A Nightingale Sang

The Stotts, an eccentric Geordie family, wage their personal battles against the terrifying backdrop of World War II. Filled with the music of the 1940’s, this bittersweet comedy is an affectionate and moving picture of the survival of everyday life in turbulent times. Written by C P Taylor and directed by Sarah Punshon, this is a New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Oldham Coliseum production.

Medea

Barrie Rutter directs Northern Broadsides in this new version of Euripedes tale written by Tom Paulin. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Featuring one of the most powerful female roles in the history of drama, Medea is an intense story fuelled by passion, hatred and deadly rage.

The vitality and commitment of Northern Broadsides under the direction of Barrie Rutter will ensure this is a very popular show. If you intend to come along with us, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can order extra tickets if need be.
